新５年生へ引き継がれた「命のバトン」と、街をむすぶ生態系ネットワーク

昨秋、西東京市立けやき小学校で産声をあげた「生きもの楽園プロジェクト」。 かつての池にメダカやエビ、貝たちが加わり、小さな命が生き生きと動き回るようになったあの場所を、この春、新しく5年生になった皆さんが引き継ぎました。

4月に行われた講演では、このプロジェクトをさらに一歩進め、「生態系ネットワーク」という大きなテーマについてもお話ししました。

The “Baton of Life” Passed on to the New Fifth Graders and the Ecological Network Connecting the Community

Last fall, the “Living Creatures Paradise Project” was launched at Nishi-Tokyo Municipal Keyaki Elementary School. This spring, the students who have just entered fifth grade took over that very spot—where medaka fish, shrimp, and pond snails have joined the former pond, bringing small lives to life as they bustle about.

During a lecture held in April, we took this project a step further and discussed the broader theme of “ecological networks.”

■ 学校のビオトープは生きものたちの「中継地点」　The school's biotope serves as a “waystation” for wildlife

 私たちの街には、公園の緑や誰かの庭、そして小さな水辺が点在しています。これらを図解しながら、生きものたちが移動し、命をつなぐための「緑と水のネットワーク」について説明しました。 学校のビオトープや、みんなで手入れする腐葉土の山。 それらは、野鳥や昆虫たちが街を旅する際の大切な「中継地点（ステッピング・ストーン）」になります。Our town is dotted with green spaces in parks, private gardens, and small bodies of water. Using diagrams to illustrate these features, I explained the “network of greenery and water” that allows living creatures to move about and sustain life. School biotopes and piles of leaf mold that we all help maintain serve as important “stepping stones” for wild birds and insects as they travel through the town.

■ 瞳を輝かせる「小さな環境家」たち “Little environmental activists” with sparkling eyes

会場に展示した生きものたちの資料を前に、「池には、遠くからたくさんのトンボが来てくれるかな？」「腐葉土があれば、カブトムシが卵を産みに来るかも！」と、自分たちの活動が学校を飛び出し、街全体の自然とつながっていることに気づいた子どもたち。その真剣な眼差しと、未来を想像する輝く瞳がとても印象的でした。 自分たちが守る小さな水辺が、やがて地域の豊かな自然をつなぐネットワークの要になっていく――。 新しい5年生とともに、今年もこの素晴らしい「命の拠点づくり」を全力でサポートしていきたいと思います。“I wonder if lots of dragonflies will come to the pond from far away?” “If we have leaf mold, maybe beetles will come to lay their eggs!” Their earnest expressions and eyes sparkling with imagination of the future left a deep impression on me. The pond that the fifth graders are protecting will eventually become a key hub in the network connecting the region’s rich natural environment. This year, too, we intend to give our full support to this wonderful “creation of a hub for life.”
